Fostering Sustainable Futures: D4P’s Insights from the Pontevedra ESEE-Degrowth 2024 Conference

With innovative technologies playing a key role in promoting participatory creativity for a sustainable future, Digital for Planet (D4P) is pleased to actively participate in the conversation and action.

Aligned with this mission, Anna Aseeva, a sustainability expert at D4P, attended the 10th International Degrowth Conference and the 15th Conference of the European Society for Ecological Economics (ESEE) that was held as a joint event ‘Pontevedra ESEE-Degrowth 2024’ in Pontevedra, Spain, from 18–21 June 2024.

Titled ‘Science, Technology, and Innovation beyond Growth: Cultivating Collective Creativity for a Sustainable Future’, the event focused on advancing human and environmental well-being, promoting cooperation, democracy, inclusiveness, transparency, and solidarity. It consisted of two parts:

The main Conference (18-21 June 2024) at the university campus of Pontevedra, featuring academic lectures, expert panels, and artistic workshops. It gathered over 1200 attendees, including scientists, experts, and activists, to discuss ecological economics and degrowth.

– ‘Beyond the Conference’: Civic Engagement and Citizen-Oriented Initiatives during the conference days, including workshops, debates, exhibitions, and contests across the city. These public activities aimed to promote active citizen participation and involvement.

D4P at the Degrowth Conference

Dr. Anna Aseeva was thus invited to attend the main Conference and present at the panel Law & Degrowth. D4P’s perspectives contributed to the success of the panel

The panel identified different points of synergies and frictions between law and degrowth, such as European and International Economic law & Degrowth, Development & Degrowth, EU Competition law & Degrowth, etc., as well as several gaps, representing further opportunities for research and action, such as Legal Tech/Digital law & Degrowth, highlighted by Dr. Aseeva. More specifically, she underscored the importance of the concept of sufficiency, including digital sufficiency, as well as the gaps in legal and policy research and action on sufficiency and, in particular, digital sufficiency.

D4P is proud to be at the forefront of these critical discussions within European ecological economics and degrowth circles, as we advance the agenda of a fairer, more inclusive, and sustainable digital future.
