According to the UN World Population Report, by 2050 about 70% of the world’s population will live in cities. Despite many positive aspects, urbanisation can also have a negative impact on citizens’ health and the environment. Studies show that cities account for more than 70% of global carbon emissions. With the global adoption of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including Goal 11: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable, cities are encouraged to make better use of information and communication technology (ICT) to address urban challenges.
